Canola Policy Statments

If you would like to comment on any of these or other policy topics of interest to canola producers please go to the Conatct page of the SCGA website.  Thank You.

Canola Crushing in Saskatchewan
The SCGA supports the current construction of new crushing facilities and expansion of current facilities in the province.  The additional canola crushing capacity will be a benefit to Saskatchewan canola producers as it will provide more competition between buyers of canola seed.  Increase value-added processing of raw commodities in the province.

Canola Meal Utilization in Saskatchewan
The SCGA supports the research and development of better methods for the use of canola meal.  The additional canola crushing capacity in the province will create additional supply of canola meal that will need to be used by either expanding current uses or find new uses for the canola meal.  These current uses include animal feed ingredients and new uses will include the fractionation of canola meal for niche uses.  We also support R&D in plant breeding for the purpose of creating more palatable and nutritional meal which will broaden the market for canola meal.

Canola Marketing
The SCGA supports well informed marketing of canola by producers.  In Saskatchewan this generally consists of selling canola to grain companies or canola crushers.  This may involve production contracts.  Producers may also use futures markets to manage risk.  Research about the canola basis can be found on the Research tab under Policy on this website.

Canola and Biotechnology
The SCGA supports the research and development of biological traits that can be used in canola plants that assist the production of canola through better agronomics.  We encourage the CFIA as well as all regulatory bodies of importing countries to evaluate the health and environmental risk of canola varieties derived from biotechnology to be based on scientific principals and standards.

Transportation
The transportation of grains and oilseeds by rail and truck is important for canola growers in Saskatchewan.  The SCGA is committed to improving the efficiency, reliability, and competitiveness of rail transportation in Canada.

Trade
The SCGA supports open and free trade which is not impeded by any restrictions for any form of canola seed or product.  The SCGA calls for the removal of all government imposed restrictions on canola trade including, but not limited to, tariffs and sanitary and phyto-sanitary rules.
